Severe Burns Life Support: SBLS

The Severe Burns Life Support (SBLS) material discusses the assessment and management of severe burns. It focusses on those situations where the full capabilities of a tertiary care centre are not available; this may be due to distance, inaccessibility or any number of other reasons. Therefore, these resources are not aimed at clinicians specialising in burns care, who will have access to their own unit, or department’s, specific policies and guidelines. Rather these resources aim to be a text covering the core principles required to provide immediate and ongoing care to patients who have sustained severe burn injuries.

These resources will consider immediate management using the CABCDEFG framework, but acknowledges that other approaches such as MARCH exist and are also valid. Clinicians should utilise the aide-mémoires and prompts with which they are most familiar. Throughout these resources the assessment and management of patients will be considered using the Minimum-Better-Best approach, taken from the paradigm of Prolonged Casualty Care.
